Tell me a little about yourself…
Hello, my name is Carol Porter, I’m a Capricorn residing in Newport News, VA. I’m a mixed media artist. I enjoy painting, drawing, sewing, paper crafts, sculpting and other media. The name of my business is Nays World.
How’d you get started, or what prompted you to begin crafting in your genre?
I’ve always had an artistic side that would peek through from time to time. In the early 90’s I was introduced to the world of rubber stamps and it’s been nonstop since then.

What do you get out of being an artist/crafter?
Balance; I find the process of creating to be very rewarding. Upon completion, there is a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Art is very therapeutic for me, which makes me a very selfish artist. I create a piece based on how I feel and what I like or for how I want to feel (when I look at the finished piece). Each piece is truly from my heart and I’m so grateful if that piece makes a connection with someone else.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere. I may be inspired by an emotion or something I see in nature or from watching another artist create in a medium that I’d like to try.
What do others seem to love about your art?
I’ve gotten wonderful feedback on my originality. The great thing about art is that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, each person makes their own connection with a piece of art separate from another person based on their own experience, background, etc.; how great is that!
What is your advice to fellow crafters and artists?
The best advice I can give is to keep exploring and to create from your heart and what appeals to you. Sure you can create whatever the latest trends are and yes they may sell, but then you’re always chasing trends or customers and eventually you’ll find that you are so far from what you really love and you won’t be happy, so just do you! A good indicator is feeling good about what you do. If you don’t feel good about what you’re doing, don’t do it.
How would you describe your style, or form of artistry?
Funky and sometimes a bit off the beaten path.
Do you have any future plans for your artwork and crafts?
Currently I’m working on expanding my Funky Girls brand. You can see a few of them in my rubberstamp section on my Etsy site. Stay tuned to see them on fabric and in other projects. I’ll continue to paint, art journal and make videos and play in all of the art areas that I love. I don’t know what the future holds but I am enjoying the journey.
