Tell me a little about yourself…
My name is Melody Cole-Gates. I reside in Dayton, Ohio with my hubby and kids. I am an artist who loves to make hand-painted, figuratives, florals, landscapes and abstracts in beautiful, inspirational or thought-provoking scenes.
How’d you get started, or what prompted you to begin crafting in your genre
I have always loved to draw ever since I was a little girl and making fashion illustrations and portraits of celebrities was what I loved doing most. But it wasn’t until December 2004 that an overwhelming desire came over me to start painting pictures that came from my heart.
How long have you been an artist? When did you first discover your artistic ability?
I have been a professional artist since February 2006. I was about 7 years old, when I discovered I had a knack for drawing.

I am inspired to paint bold, beautiful and expressive images of women of color that represents my culture in a positive light for everyone to enjoy.
What do others seem to love about your art?
That my art really touches their heart, they love the energy flowing throughout each piece and that the painting looks more beautiful in person.
What is your advice to fellow crafters and artists?
My advice would be to follow your heart. Don’t let others stop you from living your dream or finding your artistic path.
How would you describe your style, or form of artistry?
I would describe my style as abReal (abstract realism) with a pop of soulful whimsy.
Do you have any future plans for your artwork?
